Portrait of a Student

12x12 Oil on Canvas

I knew I was going to love painting, if I just got over the initial awkwardness and gave myself permission to make as many mistakes as necessary. And I know there are several mistakes in this painting! But it was such fun smoothing the paint across the canvas and blending the contours of the shapes... adding a dash of this color, or dabbing out too much of that color... Painting is a wonderful experience...
Also, it wasn't all that difficult of a transition for me to move from my pencil drawing of the students to oil-painted portraits. This is a little girl from last year's class, you might remember her. I won't tell you her name, but she has the sweetest, gentlest manner and such an expressive face... I decided she was the perfect candidate for my first real oil portrait.
I still wanted to do a pencil sketch before I started painting, and I'm very glad I did. I propped up the sketch on one side of the easel and her photograph on the other, and looked back and forth between the two.
The coolest thing was her shirt... It took me all of 5 minutes to paint that shirt, whereas it would have taken over two hours in colored pencil!
I think I will be proceeding slowly with the painting, but I definitely think this is the right direction for me.
Have a good weekend, friends. Is it cold and rainy where you are? I'm drinking my tea and wearing my wool socks as I write this!

  10. You did a great job on this and I'm so happy you're pleased with it! Going from colored pencils to oils seems like it would be a huge leap but you've done it as easily as a tiny frog hopping from one leaf to another, never looking down :) Congratulations!!!

  11. K! OM GOSH! Such a lovely piece!

You do so have the talent for the oils! All of those years of blending colors with the pencils were excellent training.

Have the student and her parents seen this portrait? Such flattery!

    YOU GO, GIRL!! FABULOUS!!

  12. You did great! Super in fact! I remember the drawing you made of this girl and your hopes for her future. I think what you found here is that once you knew your subject the medium didn't matter so much. You blended and placed and blended some more just as with colored pencil. You KNEW where to highlight and shade and did it. Did you do a happy dance afterwards? I hope so because this deserves one as do you for daring to try!

  19. Don't you just love oils? Oils and acrylics is where my heart is. I try to persevere with the loose watercolours but I know that my own style is realism and that, that is what I want to concentrate on. Your portrait is stunning! She must have been SO thrilled with this! I can't wait to se more :0)
