Pencil Portrait Time Again

The first of 25 little portraits for this year...
What images come into your mind unbidden? During those quiet moments of contemplation, or right before you fall asleep, and just before you wake up... when the mind invites those elusive thoughts and perceptions to surface from the deeper parts of our subconscious... I think that the images and ideas that crop up during those moments are always the most telling of one's current state of mind.
After drawing all day, when I closed my eyes last night, my mind instantly filled with beautiful, flowing shapes and colors and I felt very contented, capable and confident, not at all like the hanging-from-a-cliff-by-my-fingertips feeling that I get when thoughts of school enter my mind...
Is my subconscious trying to tell me something? Is it time? Is thirty years long enough to spend in the classroom? Maybe I should stop trying to hold onto the edge of the cliff, and just let go and see if I can fly...
Anyway, here is my updated WIP, after about 28 hours. The graphite portrait above is one of my students, of course!.
Hope you're staying warm and snug this winter. I'm still waiting for that early morning phone call, "Snow Day!".

  1. Wishing you happy snow days! This might be speaking to you. "The reason to paint is not to produce a painting. The reason to paint is to live at a level of existence that is unavailable to most human beings. Robert Henri"

  9. Hi Katherine, after having read your thoughts I said to me: these are very similar to what I was thinking before my retirement! When I was working most of my thoughts were work oriented (too much probably)and very often I thought, as you, I should stop being tied to a rock and try to let me fly.... But, these were the thoughts that I was doing between a dream and the other...... I waited years and years, keeping my foot on the ground, before leaving my thoughts to fly.
Your work is progressing fantastically! Hug.

  12. First, thank you so much for kindly stopping by my blog. Secondly, I love the quiet moment you captured of your student reading and I can't wait to see more of your work in progress. Often, I also daydream about painting and feel very restless when I can't spend more time doing it.

  18. The portrait is wonderful- and I love the post about signatures. I must admit I never thought about it that much even though I have seen Norman Rockwell's many times!
