"Schoolhouse"
Pen and Pencil drawing on 1905 envelope
I have another Open Gallery Night coming up this Friday, and I've been thinking hard about how I can make my little wall stand out amongst all the other studios full of beautiful paintings. I want to offer something special and unique that can only be found in my little space. At the same time, I don't want to compromise my own inspirations and my own vision about my art, just to appeal to potential buyers. It's a fine line. (No pun intended)
But several unrelated ideas in my head suddenly came together this past week, and I'm sort of excited about the outcome. I was browsing around at the local flea market, looking for cool jars or yarn balls, or other things to draw, and I saw a box of antique envelopes. I was totally mesmerized by them; the handwriting, the places, the dates... and some of them had letters inside them still! My imagination just soared as I thought of the stories that these envelopes held. I had to have them!
I decided to draw something that was befitting to the date or place on each envelope. I also bought some antique newspapers, sheet music, and a few old documents to draw on. Then I drove around town taking photos of a few old buildings that I loved to use for reference photos. (The baseball scene is from a photo I took at the Reds' playoff game, but I changed the uniforms to the vintage Cincinnati Red Stockings.)

A long time ago, l did pen drawings for the Sketchbook Project, if you remember. I forgot how much I enjoyed the quickness and ease of working with a pen, and the challenge of not being able to erase or paint over. I think the pen also invites me to be more spontaneous and take more risks with the drawing. You'll notice the background foliage is very free and impressionistic. That's not typical of me, but it was fun, and I didn't worry about ruining the drawing, since I had only spent one day on it, rather than my usual two or three months.

Pen and Pencil drawing on 1908 |
I'm hoping that I'll have something unique and special to offer that sets my work apart from other artists. Something to make people remember my work, but I can stay true to my own style and my own inspirations.
Making my art has to bring me personal joy and satisfaction, first and foremost. Selling it, showing it, and reaping accolades are just extra little pleasures. The bottom line is that we do it because it's fun. Remember that!
Beautiful. This is a great idea!
ReplyDeleteWow, K! Those are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteSo charming! I suggest that you not sell those as onesies; they should be reproduced and made into a line of notecards and prints. They would be perfect to sell at your history museum; the buyer for the gift store would have to be thrilled to "find" them. Put them on display at Open Gallery Night, but don't sell them!! They are treasures that you must make available to a larger audience.
Unas preciosas ilustraciones que, como el buen vino, mejoran con los años.
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo.
Amen...divine inspiration! Nothing replaces original art.I know you will succeed in whatever you choose!
ReplyDeleteOh Katherine!! These are so beautiful and definitely unique! They should be displayed by themselves in your little space! A WINNER!..
ReplyDeleteOh Katherine these are precious! What a wonderful idea and yes I agree it works well with what you do. You'll be bumming after you run out of old envelopes! I think it will be a huge hit.

Wow. These are fabulous, Katherine! Such a clever idea! You've added an incredible amount of beauty to the envelopes. :)
ReplyDeleteDear Katherine - what a super idea and lovely artistry. I especially love the schoolhouse. As always your art is outstanding and I know you have stayed true to yourself. Thanks for sharing and reminding us that art is suppose to be fun. Good luck with your art show.
ReplyDeleteFabulous idea Katherine. Love the results.
ReplyDeleteWe (David and I) volunteer at the eBay office of Pilgrims Hospices. The Hospices have several Charity (thrift) shops on Kent High Streets. Better quality items are sent to the eBay office where we photograph and list them to sell worldwide. We often receive vintage postcards and collections of sepia photographs. Many of them have me itching to draw the fabulous ladies and gentlemen featured in the photos ... they always seem to look so stern! Such a shame that these items get onto the open market ... but perhaps there are no family members to inherit them.
Katherine this is an amazing idea, and it is so completely you! YOu are an artist with integrity, and I absolutely admire you for that. I love how you are being true to yourself and still creating something that will mark you as unique among the crowd. I can't wait to hear about how the show goes. Crossing my fingers for you!!
Gros bisous

ReplyDeleteThey were a big hit last night! (Maybe just for the novelty of the old envelopes). There were lots of questions and conversations and lots of requests for business cards! But no definite, "I'll take that one, here's the money." That's okay. I had fun!
ReplyDeleteKatherine sorry I'm a bit late to the post but your idea was and is totally wonderful. You know I get the feeling lately that no matter how ingenious and different we are, selling art is difficult at the moment. In my area it's almost impossible. I'm wondering about that lately. You certainly have outdone yourself in creativity that is different from others that's for sure. You are so right one must do art first and foremost for ourselves. The rest is just a bonus!
ReplyDeleteKate, I just love these sketches!!! What a wonderful inspiration you had. This is fresh and original and you did a beautiful job on every one of them. Way to go, girl!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! There is always something unique in your works. Very poetic. Bravo Katherine
